of Edinburgh to Penang

The object of the Rally was to give H.R.H the Duke of Edinburgh a short glimpse of the voluntary organization in Penang on Wednesday, 31st October 1956.  It was held at the Rally of Voluntary organizations, Residency ground.  The huge crowd waiting at the Kedah Pier, cheered as the Royal barge came into view.  At one minute past ten, the Duke in an Admiral's uniform stepped out with the High Commissioner Sir Donald MacGillivray.
The Big Ben chimed as he came ashore.  The Resident Commissioner, Mr R P Bingham greeted the visitors as they walked on the 150 feet red carpet to a waiting car.  The fort resounded with a 21 gun salute, sirens from ships in the harbour, the Royal visit had begun.
