Lauching of the Penang YWCA Centenary Celebration

The Penang YWCA Centenary Celebration was launched on 11th October 2008 by YB Lydia Ong Kok Fooi, Chairman of State Youth and Sports, Women, Family and Community Development Commitee.

The unveiling of the 100 years YWCA Penang logo was done by YB Lydia Ong, Dr Marina David President of YWCA Penang, immediate Past President Datin Seri Elizabeth Devaraj and Trustee Mrs Ann Rajenram. The concept behind the logo was explained, preceded by the speech from YB Lydia Ong.

The members of the YWCA and guests were then invited to participate in the launching of the Centenary Celebration by the releasing of 100 blue and white balloons.

Celebrating a Centenary of Serving Women

YWCA Penang celebrated 100 years of serving women and the community in June 2009. To commemorate this momentous event, a colourful logo representing YWCA Penang's contributions past, present and future was designed. The ten stars represent 100 years and the double zero's illustrating the figure '100' is the universal symbol denoting infinity. The latter is especially pertinent because it is symbolic of the pledge that YWCA Penang will continue to serve women and community in the years to come. The riot of colours used in the logo reflects Penang's multicultural and multihued character.

Dr Marina David, President of the YWCA Penang, in her speech said...

I could not end here without telling you about three of our unsung heroines....

(as in article beside)

The first one, is a lady who has served the Y Penang for

many years, tirelessly networking with other NGOs and

has been president of the YWCA Penang for 17 year.

She is none other than Datin Seri Elizabeth Devaraj.

The second woman is a lady who has been a pioneer

member of the YWCA Penang. She was only 24 years of                                                       age when she served in the general committee of YWCA

Penang... When she left Penang, she served in the                                                                    YWCA  of Ipoh and Malacca, initiated the YWCA of                                                                 Petaling Jaya, Klang and Port Klang and is currently                                                                 serving in the YWCA of Kuala Lumpur and is a National                                                        Executive Board Member. She is none other than Datuk Rasammah Bhupalan, who is 82 years of age, and whose fantastic               memory has contributed vastly to the coffee table book.

Lastly, the woman who made sure that a hostel of the

YWCA Penang, was built.

A Home Away from Home, became a reality eventually

due to her hard work and commitment. Her unfailing

memory also contributed towards the production of the

coffee table book. She is not here today but has sent her

best wishes and prayers. She is Mrs Goh Heng Chong.
