The object of the Rally was to give HRH the Duke of Edinburgh a short glimpse of the voluntary organisation in Penang on Wednesday, 31st October 1956.
It was held at the Rally of Voluntary organisation, Residency grounds.
The huge crowd waiting at the Kedah Pier, cheered as the Royal barge came into view. At one minute past ten, the Duke in an Admiral’s uniform stepped out with the High Commissioner Sir Donald MacGillivray.
The Big Ben chimed as he came ashore. The Resident Commissioner, Mr R.P. Bingham greeted the visitors as they walked on the 150 feet red carpet to a waiting car.
The fort resounded with a 21 gun salute, sirens from ships in the harbour, the Royal visit had begun. The first school he passed was the Convent in Light Street named after Francis Light, Penang’s founder. Next was St Xavier’s Institution, round Farquhar Street junction as the bells of the Cathedral of the Assumption pealed a merry welcome. It was cheers all the way as 230,000 people of George Town lined the streets to greet the Duke of Edinburgh.
The first stop on the Royal route was at the Volunteer Headquarters in Peel Avenue. Here the Duke inspected the M.A.A.F and watched an exhibition of hand-grenade throwing by men of the Penang unit of the Federation Volunteer Reconnaissance Corps. The St John’s Ambulance Brigade gave a mock riot and first-aid demonstration. (article continues below...)

At the Penang Free School, the last stop before lunch, the headmaster Mr J.E. Tod, invited the Duke to plant a Casuarina tree to commemorate the Royal Visit. A visit to the Penang Nurses’ hostel and Dental Training School ended the Royal Programme in Penang.
At 2.50pm, the Duke took off in a R.A.F Sycamore for Butterworth. Thousands gave him a rousing send off, as the helicopter started. The Duke waved to the crown and left.
Malaysia’s oldest British Settlement loved every minute of it.

Ingredients:
2 Katties Bangkwang or white turnips
4 pieces Yellow Bean Curd (Tau Kua)
½ Katty French Beans
½ Katty Meat
½ Katty PrawnS
4 Cloves Garlic
1 spoon Tau Cheow or white Soya Bean Sauce
Method
Cut up the Bangkwang, Tau Kua, French Beans and meat into long thin strips. Fry the Tau Kua in a little oil. Pound garlic finely. Fry garlic in oil till crisp, then add Tau Cheow or White Soya Sauce, then add the sliced meat and Prawns. Add in all the other ingredients and allow to simmer till soft. Season with salt and pepper. Lastly add in friend bean curd.
Piatek Shells
1 cup Flour
4 Hen’s Egg
Pinch of salt
Mix together into a thin batter.
